Challenges faced by nurses in India

Nursing is a profession which binds human society with a bond of care and love. Nursing practice has not remained up to hospitals only but expanded and still extending to different settings. Nurses has to deal with the most precious thing in the world i.e. human life.

Nurses play an important role in the healthcare departments of the country, providing care and carrying out leadership roles in the hospitals, and healthcare departments. This profession is full of challenges because you never know who and in which condition case may arrive.

Nursing isn’t an easy job they have to face several challenges which are:

1.       Workload and responsibilities

Huge amount of workload and responsibilities and multiple tasks at the same time can often leads to disturbed mental peace which ultimately effects the efficiency of the care. The visitors may sometimes start arguments without proper knowledge of things.

2.      Shortage of staff

At present the nurse to patient ratio is high due to which it becomes sometimes unmanageable to handle things. The overload due to higher ratio disturbs the nurse’s environment and patience. With more patients than nurses, leads to more causalities, injuries, less care.

3.      Workplace health hazards

Nurses need to work with a variety of biological, physical, and chemical health hazards while performing their duties. Their may occur any causality if worked in pressure without mental peace. It should be taken care by the department.

4.     Long working hours

Short staff nurses lead to more responsibilities and duties which ultimately leads to long duty hours or double shifts. Continuously working for long hours can affect health and state of mind. Which will ultimately affect the nursing care.

5.      Lack of team work

Lack of team work has been an emerging challenge in the health care sector. If the patient not satisfied by the care provided during his treatment, he ultimately blames nurses even if it is not her fault. Non availability of equipment may render the quality of care.

6.      Non-nursing roles

In almost all heath care departments, nurses do play roles which are not even theirs. Hence, they got minimum time for their own duties and responsibilities. They sometimes need to work on billing counters, record keepings, laundry, diet, physiotherapy etc thereby diminishing time for patient care.

These are some general difficulties which a nurse has to face. It is not like nursing profession is not good or not for you. There are some points which needs to be discussed for a peaceful environment of work.

Which will be discussed in the next blog.
